Chandigarh: Refusing to intervene in the controversy regarding the claim of both Gurjar and Rajput communities in Haryana over Samrat Mihir Bhoj, a ninth-century ruler of northern India, Punjab and Haryana high court has made it clear that the matter should be left to the state-constituted committee.Disposing of the matter, a division bench headed by Chief Justice Sheel Nagu observed that the matter must have lost its sting due to the passage of time. The controversy began over the unveiling of a statue of Mihir Bhoj by the Gurjar community in Kaithal district of Haryana. The matter reached before HC in 2023 in the wake of a petition filed by Ram Karan Singh and some other residents of Kaithal, Yamunanagar and Ambala districts of Haryana. The petition sought directions for immediate steps to maintain law and order in Kaithal till the final decision on the petition.Directions were also sought to prevent “misuse” of historical and national figures like Samrat Mihir Bhoj by erecting their statues at public places “for the agenda of any specific community / caste and religion”. Following HC’s intervention, a committee was constituted to resolve the controversy.
