The next day, people found him in a gutter and took him to the local police station. The biological parents went to RG Kar but their details were not recorded and the baby was marked ‘unknown’.

Following an FIR, the child was handed to the CWC. Meanwhile, the parents made every effort to get their child back. They moved the HC in 2024, when the court directed CWC to ascertain the parents’ identity. The second time, they moved the single bench of Justice Krishna Rao, seeking the child’s custody. Their counsel, Moyukh Mukherjee, submitted that despite the DNA report, confirming them as the biological parents, the child was not given to them. The probe report showed the grandmother had harmed the child. Justice Rao said: “The grandmother died, or she would be prosecuted … They are not fit to continue as the committee chairperson.”
