Chennai: A practising lawyer has moved Madras high court seeking a direction to the Tamil Nadu govt to fill the vacancies of two members at the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC). The commission is now functioning with only the chairperson.Advocate N Panneerselvam alleged that due to the unfilled vacancy, the number of pending cases has increased to 37,000. Admitting the PIL, the first bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan directed the state govt to file its response in two weeks.According to the petitioner, the unfilled vacancies have contributed to delays in addressing human rights violations, which in turn have aggravated issues such as law-and-order problems, deaths in judicial custody, and custodial deaths in police stations..
