Hisar: In a significant breakthrough for oilseed production, Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) has developed its first hybrid mustard variety, RHH-2101, aimed at enhancing productivity in irrigated regions. The newly developed variety is expected to benefit farmers across Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Jammu and northern Rajasthan, while also contributing to reducing the country’s dependence on edible oil imports.HAU vice-chancellor Prof Baldev Raj Kamboj congratulated the team of scientists behind the development, stating that the hybrid has recently been officially notified. “This variety will prove to be a game-changer for mustard growers in irrigated areas,” he said. Developed under the All India Coordinated Research Project on Mustard and Rapeseed, the hybrid underwent three years of rigorous testing before release. It offers an average yield of 28–30 quintals per hectare, outperforming existing varieties.According to university data, RHH-2101 yields 14.5% more than RH-749, 11% more than DMH-1, and 8% more than leading private hybrid varieties. Kamboj added that the combination of higher yield and improved oil content will not only boost oilseed production but also enhance farmers’ income. He also highlighted that the university’s mustard research team has received the “Best Centre Award” four times in the past 12 years.The hybrid was developed by a team led by Dr Ram Avtar, along with Dr Neeraj Kumar, Dr Manjeet Singh, Dr Ashok Kumar and Dr Subhash Chandra, with support from other researchers. Research director Dr Rajbir Garg said the variety’s superior plant structure and seed traits contribute to its higher productivity compared with existing varieties.HAU among leading oilseed research centresHAU has so far developed 25 improved varieties of mustard and rapeseed, along with one hybrid.
