36-year-old ends life over loan recovery pressure (AI image used for representational purpose only)

AHMEDABAD: Harassment by loan recovery agents over a missed home loan EMI drove a 36-year-old delivery executive to suicide by jumping into the Narmada canal near Adalaj, his family alleged in a complaint filed with the Adalaj police. Based on a complaint filed by the wife of the deceased, Adalaj police registered a case of abetment to suicide against two recovery agents.According to the FIR, the victim took a mortgage loan against his family’s house in Chandlodia and was regularly paying the equated monthly instalments (EMIs). However, after missing an instalment last month, he allegedly began receiving repeated calls from recovery agents demanding repayment.The FIR states that on June 18, the man returned home from work before stepping out again later in the evening. When his wife called him around 2.30am, he told her he was outside and would return shortly. However, he did not return and calls to his mobile phone went unanswered.The family lodged a missing person’s complaint the next day. Later that evening, his electric scooter was found abandoned near the Narmada canal at Jamiyatpura.Police recovered a handwritten note from the scooter in which the man allegedly blamed “loan agents” for harassing him over the overdue instalment. The note specifically named Sahil Rabari and Baldev Maldhari, accusing them of repeatedly pressuring him for payment.His body was recovered from the Narmada canal near Sherisa village on June 20.In her complaint, the victim’s wife alleged that the two accused repeatedly called her husband between June 5 and June 18, subjecting him to continuous mental harassment over the unpaid instalment.After completing the victim’s last rites, the family approached Adalaj police seeking action against the two men. Police have booked the two men on charges of abetment to suicide.
