Srinagar, Sep 8: People’s Democratic Front (PDF) President and former minister Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen on Tuesday paid tribute to National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on his 44th death anniversary, recalling his role in Jammu and Kashmir’s political and social history.
Yaseen described Sheikh Abdullah’s dismissal and arrest in 1953 as a “historic blunder”, saying its political repercussions continued to be felt in J&K.
He said the developments of 1953 contributed to political uncertainty and alienation in the region for decades. Referring to the 1975 Sheikh-Indira Accord, Yaseen said it represented an attempt to address the political developments that had followed Sheikh Abdullah’s dismissal and restore stability.
Yaseen urged the National Conference to remain committed to Sheikh Abdullah’s legacy of safeguarding the political, economic and social interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
“The legacy of Sheikh Abdullah should not remain confined to ceremonial tributes; it should be reflected in political action and commitment to the people,” he said.
Yaseen also called upon people to remember Sheikh Abdullah’s contribution to J&K while drawing lessons from the political developments that shaped the region’s subsequent history.
