Guwahati: Casting a shadow on the pre-election momentum, the Greater Guwahati Fair Price Dealers’ Association has warned of a collective poll boycott, announcing that its members will refrain from voting unless their key demands are met by the govt.The declaration has brought attention to the grievances of fair price shop dealers, who play a crucial role in the public distribution system (PDS) across the city.Association president Bishnu Das alleged that despite being an essential link between the govt and beneficiaries, dealers have been facing persistent challenges that remain unresolved. “At a time of massive inflation, we have not benefitted financially. Instead, we are burdened both economically and mentally. That is why we have decided not to vote this time,” Das said.Reiterating their concerns, the traders pointed to the cumbersome four-finger authentication process that consumers undergo while purchasing ration. Das said the process is extremely time-consuming, and dealers often face customers’ anger when fingerprints do not match. As a result, ration distribution is not completed within the given time.Listing their demands, Das said govt should increase the commission for free rice distribution by Rs 300 per quintal, considering the rising workload and expenses. He also demanded a monthly remuneration of Rs 30,000 for workers to ensure financial stability.The workers sought Rs 10 lakh health insurance coverage and access to low-interest loans of at least Rs 5 lakh to support their financial needs. They also called for transparent distribution system through single-fingerprint authentication or improved ration card-based delivery to reduce errors and irregularities.Furthermore, they urged the govt to resolve discrepancies between Smart PDS and online allocation and closing balance to ensure smooth and accurate distribution of essential commodities.The association, which has over 600 members in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, announced that on April 1 it will organise a protest, urging all fair price dealers to come together and raise public awareness against this neglect.
