Gurgaon: The city recorded 66.5mm of rainfall between Aug 21 and 27, 58% above its normal weekly rainfall of 42.2mm.The city’s rainfall performance for the week was among the better ones in the state, which recorded a 31% rainfall deficit during the week, according to India Meteorological Department’s weekly weather report issued on Thursday.While the city received 24.3mm more rain than its weekly normal, several districts in northern and central Haryana recorded substantial deficits. Jind and Charkhi Dadri, for instance, recorded virtually no rain during the week, with deficits of 99% each, while Karnal and Kurukshetra recorded deficits of 86% each.The IMD report shows that the rainfall distribution across the city was uneven over the week. The state received an average of 21.6mm against a normal of 31.2mm.The city’s cumulative monsoon rainfall, however, remained only marginally above normal. Between June 1 and Aug 27, the city received 408.2mm against a normal of 390.9mm, a surplus of 4%.This puts the city among the districts that have so far managed to stay within the normal rainfall range despite considerable variation from week to week.The neighbouring districts also saw relatively high rainfall during the week. Palwal recorded 66.8mm, which was 126% above its normal weekly rainfall, while Faridabad received 64.7mm, 38% above normal. Nuh recorded 57.9mm, 49% above normal. Rewari, in contrast, received 13.6mm, 52% below normal.IMD’s district rainfall map for the 24-hour period ending 8.30am on Aug 27 showed no rainfall recorded for the city, while Rewari recorded 3.8mm, Nuh 0.4mm, Faridabad 1mm and Palwal no rainfall. The figures indicate that the substantial rainfall recorded in the city during the week was concentrated on earlier days rather than in the 24 hours ending Thursday morning.The weekly report also records significant weather activity across Haryana during the period. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds were reported on five days, while heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places on days 2 to 6 of the reporting period. Light to moderate rainfall was reported at a few places on days 2, 3 and 5, and at isolated places on days 1, 4, 6 and 7.The rainfall pattern was closely linked to changing monsoon systems over the region. According to the report, the monsoon trough shifted across north India during the week, while an upper air cyclonic circulation over north Haryana and adjoining areas persisted for several days. By Aug 27, the western disturbance had become less marked.The weekly data also highlight a sharp geographical variation in rainfall across Haryana. Sonipat received 42.3mm, 18% above normal, while Fatehabad recorded 17.7mm, 13% above normal. At the other end, Sirsa received only 1.5mm, 89% below normal, and Rohtak received 9.2mm, 78% below normal.Despite the uneven weekly distribution, the state’s overall monsoon rainfall remained below normal. Haryana had received 276.1mm between June 1 and Aug 27, against a normal of 338.8mm, a cumulative deficit of 18%.The southern districts around Gurgaon have generally performed better over the season. Nuh had received 387.8mm against a normal of 367.9mm, a 5% surplus, while Palwal had received 397.6mm against a normal of 312.1mm, a 27% surplus. Faridabad’s seasonal rainfall stood at 430.2mm against a normal of 425.7mm, leaving it with a marginal 1% surplus.In contrast, several districts in northern Haryana continued to face significant seasonal deficits. Ambala’s cumulative rainfall was 50% below normal, Panchkula’s 44% below normal, Jind’s 56% below normal and Sirsa’s 50% below normal. Karnal recorded a 39% deficit, while Rohtak was 41% below normal.For the city, the latest figures point to a relatively balanced monsoon season so far, with the district’s seasonal rainfall 4% above normal, despite the state continuing to remain 18% below its seasonal normal.
