Ahmedabad: As the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) included questions on the subject of the Bhagavad Gita in its English language test on Saturday, it led to confusion among many students who were unaware of the inclusion of the subject in their syllabus this year.Sources said that after the English language paper included 5 to 7 questions on the subject of the Bhagavad Gita in its MCQ section, many students expressed surprise and alleged that the questions were asked from a subject that was not in their syllabus. The board had incorporated value-based chapters from the text into first language textbooks for Classes 9-12 in the 2025-26 academic year. “Chapters 1 and 2 on the Bhagavad Gita were included in the Class 12 English language textbook,” said an official. Some schools even prepared PDFs for circulation among their students and instructed them that questions on the text could be asked in the board exam. One of the teachers asserted, “Some schools did not convey to their students the inclusion of the subject, and the students were clueless during the exam when the questions on the Gita were asked. Perhaps they referred only to the textbook prescribed by the NCERT. Otherwise, the question paper was relatively easy.”
