Vadodara: The Gujarat Refinery of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) is set to begin production of polypropylene, with the public sector undertaking (PSU) aiming to cater to growing domestic demand for the polymer.“We aim to start the plant by the end of this fiscal year. The plant will initially produce 500 kilotonnes of polypropylene,” said Biplob Biswas, executive director and refinery head of IOCL’s Gujarat Refinery. He said demand for polypropylene is expected to increase in the coming years.IOCL currently produces polypropylene at its Paradip refinery in Odisha and Panipat refinery in Haryana. Company sources said imports account for around 25-30% of domestic polypropylene demand, with the remainder being met by local production.Established in 1966, Gujarat Refinery is currently in its diamond jubilee year. IOCL is also expanding its refining capacity at the facility to 18 million metric tonnes per annum under the ongoing LuPech project. The company has also strengthened its presence in the petrochemical sector with its Acrylic Acid and Butyl Acrylate plant at Dumad. The plant completed one year of operations in June 2026. IOCL said the facility marks its entry into a new petrochemical segment while helping reduce import dependence and supporting downstream industries and the MSME ecosystem.
