Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Road Safety Authority (GRSA), the lead agency that works coordination with various state govt departments to increase road safety, has proposed to ensure at least 75% compliance to rules on wearing seat belts and helmets by 2030.As part of its Road Safety Action Plan 2030, the GRSA has also proposed implementing e-enforcement across all 17 municipal corporations of the state besides in all high-risk, high-density corridors.In 2024, helmet violations alone constituted nearly half of all traffic violations in Ahmedabad city. According to official data for 2024, every 30 seconds, one person was caught for not wearing a helmet. During the year, 10 lakh citizens were fined Rs 4.86 crore for helmet rule violations.According to official data, there was a tenfold increase in the offence of not wearing a helmet since 2023. In 2023, the number of helmet rule offenders was 1.87 lakh, and fines amounted to Rs 11.15 crore. In 2024, the city traffic police collected a fine of Rs 21.69 crore from nearly 20 lakh offenders.Among other measures that GRSA has proposed to be implemented over the next five years include installing crash barriers at 1,250 locations, conducting eye check-ups of 1.25 lakh truck and bus drivers, organising awareness programmes at 4,250 educational institutions, and promoting the ‘Good Samaritan’ scheme across the state.
