Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), along with Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), has launched a pilot project to install modern traffic and parking-cum-commuter sheds at key locations across the city under National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).As part of the project, traffic shelters are being installed at Rupali Square and Power House Square, two of the city’s busiest intersections. It seeks to combine climate-responsive infrastructure with urban beautification drive. Besides, four parking-cum-commuter sheds are being developed at strategic points along Smart Janpath.A key feature of the initiative is the use of flame vine creepers over specially designed fabric canopies. As the creepers grow, they will create a natural green canopy over the structures, reducing heat absorption and lowering ambient temperatures around waiting areas.“The sheds feature a contemporary design that combines functionality, aesthetics and sustainability. One of the key highlights is the use of flame vine creepers over fabric canopies, which will gradually form a natural green cover. This eco-friendly feature is expected to reduce heat absorption during the summer months and create a cooler and comfortable environment for people waiting at traffic junctions or parking areas,” said BDA vice-chairman Chanchal Rana.Officials said the green cover is expected not only to improve the visual appeal of major roads but also support the broader objectives of NCAP by promoting urban greening and helping mitigate the urban heat island effect. Increased vegetation along transport corridors can also contribute to improved air quality by trapping dust and airborne pollutants, they added.
