Dhubri: A grassroots environmental initiative in Assam is steadily transforming the district’s landscape with an ambitious afforestation drive. Kalpataru–Dhubri, a local organisation dedicated to ecological restoration, has pledged to plant two lakh seedlings across Dhubri district by the end of this year.In the past four months alone, the group has planted 20,000 seedlings of diverse species, including evergreen, ornamental, and rain trees (siris). Since its inception in 2016, Kalpataru–Dhubri has planted over 12 lakh seedlings across the district — along roadsides, within enclosures, and in open areas protected by cattle fencing.Speaking to TOI, the organisation’s president, Suchibrata Singha Choudhury, said “We have set a target of planting two lakh seedlings this year, and 20,000 have already been planted. Today, along a 1-km stretch at Dhoraghat under Gauripur Police Station, we planted 2,000 seedlings on both sides of the road with the support of villagers and our volunteers,” he said.Choudhury highlighted key plantation sites this year, including the Dumordoh–Chatan Road (1.5 km), a cremation ground (500 metres), the Nalia–Berbhangi area, and villages along the Indo-Bangladesh border (1 km).Expressing confidence in meeting the target, he noted that the upcoming monsoon months — June through Sept — offer ideal conditions for plantation activities.
