Nagpur: The Maharashtra govt has admitted that residents in parts of Nagpur received irregular and contaminated water supply in April. Replying to a starred question in the state legislature, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde confirmed that complaints regarding erratic and contaminated water supply by OCW, the company responsible for water distribution in the city, were received during the period. The govt also confirmed that over 25,000 consumers were issued inflated water bills between Sept 2025 and March 2026 without the approval of the competent authority. Following directions from Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the company withdrew the bills. NMC withheld payments of Rs10.35 crore to the company until revised bills were issued, after which the amount was released. The reply to a starred question by MLC Abhijit Wanjari further stated that residents repeatedly complained to OCW about the poor quality and irregularity of water supply. In response, the govt said that whenever complaints of contaminated water are received, the affected area is immediately isolated, water supply through the pipeline is stopped, and tanker water is provided to residents. Cameras are inserted into the affected pipelines to detect leakages, the source of contamination is identified and sealed, and old pipelines are replaced wherever necessary. The govt maintained that all complaints relating to irregular and contaminated water supply received during April 2026 were addressed promptly by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. Consequently, the question of delay in taking action does not arise, the reply added.
