Thiruvananthapuram: N Seshadrinathan has been appointed as state election commissioner (SEC) after governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar approved state cabinet’s recommendation.A former district judge, Ernakulam-native Seshadrinathan succeeds A Shahjahan, who retired from the post. The appointment triggered dissent within Congress, with KPCC general secretary P M Niyas emerging as one of its strongest critics. A section of the party opposed Seshadrinathan’s appointment, alleging that he had links with Sangh Parivar. However, with cabinet’s recommendation already forwarded to the governor and receiving approval, there was little scope for the decision to be revisited.
