Gurgaon: Govt schools in the city shifted from manual attendance registers to a fully digital attendance system after the Haryana education department directed all schools in the district to record student attendance online through Nipuna Haryana Portal. The move was amied at improving accuracy, transparency and efficiency in record-keeping of students’ attendance.Under the new system, school staff log in using their unified district information system for education (U-DISE) code and password, select the relevant class, section and academic session, and mark students’ daily attendance directly on the portal. Earlier, teachers had to maintain registers and manually calculate attendance percentages at the end of the academic year, a process that was time-consuming and prone to calculation errors. With the digital platform now in place, attendance percentages and details of absences are generated automatically once the data is entered, reducing the administrative burden on teachers and school heads.Principals in the district welcomed the move. “The digital system has made our work much easier. Preparing annual attendance summaries now takes minutes instead of hours,” said one principal. Another senior school head said, “Manual calculations often left room for minor errors. The portal ensures accuracy and saves valuable time that we can now devote to academic planning.”The portal also includes an error correction mechanism that allows teachers to rectify attendance entries through a defined procedure if mistakes occur. A senior official from the education department said, “Online attendance will bring greater transparency and accountability. We will now be able to monitor attendance patterns in real time.”Officials said the shift to online tracking will provide a clearer picture of student attendance across schools and by analysing real-time data, authorities can identify students with low attendance at an early stage and take timely corrective measures to prevent dropouts.Schools were instructed to update attendance records promptly and ensure that staff are trained to use the system.
