Mother and wife of the accused

Kolkata: Standing outside the Baruipur sub-divisional hospital, 65-year-old Sandhya Mondal, mother of Prabhas, the accused who died in an ‘encounter’ said on Wednesday that her son got what he deserved.“His father is ill. I work as an ayah. My daughter-in-law also works. He (Prabhas) did nothing,” she said. Her daughter-in-law, Chapa, later persuaded her to finish the legalities for the last rites.“He never listened to me and was always intoxicated,” she said.Chapa, who is in her early 30s, said, “I have been running the household while enduring a lot of torture.” Prabhas has a 16-year-old son.“Police told me that my son was dead and asked if I would like to visit the hospital. I told them that I could not go as my husband is sick. I told them to go ahead and do whatever they wanted,” the mother said.“My son has been punished for what he did,” she added. She refused to accept his body. Later, she mentioned that Chapa had convinced her to comply with the formailities.According to police sources, a magisterial inquiry will be conducted on Prabhas’s body.It was at the hospital, where they had gone to identify the body, the women finally broke down and they told that they were apprehensive that, after all this, their own jobs might become uncertain.Their anguish was also evident when TOI visited his home in Surjapur.Their neighbour, Sulata Mondal, said, “The women were the only ones who earned in the family. Prabhas not only tortured his wife, but he also had a habit of troubling neighbourhood women. He would make insinuations and accost them if they were alone. He was a constant nuisance. So, his death brings some closure to all of us who suffered due to his misdeeds. His family too will get to live more peacefully.”
