Nagpur: A good Samaritan’s intervention when a gang was assaulting a child has triggered invocation of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against a 5-member gang in Kapil Nagar. This is second MCOCA case of Kapil Nagar police in three months after a gang of narco-peddlers was slapped with the provision. On May 30, Rinku Upadhyay, 26, an auto driver residing at NIT Quarter, spotted five local goons mercilessly beating a child on the road. When Upadhyay intervened, Ashutosh alias Titiya Uke, 34, verbally abused and threatened him while Rajat Patil, 26, brandished a knife. As the complainant tried to go home, Samish alias Lucky Meshram, 31, of Nari Road assaulted him with a wooden stick. Rajat and Ashutosh alias Titiya even tried to stab him with knives. He dodged the fatal blows but sustained injury on his hand and managed to rush inside his house and lock the door. The enraged gang then banged on his door, proclaiming themselves as local dons.Kapil Nagar police registered a case against five accused, including Gaurav alias Baba Gharde, 24, of Kamgar Nagar, and Nishant alias Honey Sukesh Pali, 20, of Nari Road, who were also arrested and are in judicial custody. Two knives and a wooden stick were seized from their possession.Investigation revealed that main accused Ashutosh alias Titiya has 19 criminal cases, Rajat Patil has eight, Nishant alias Honey has 11, Gaurav alias Baba has seven and Samish alias Lucky has seven cases.Considering the organised nature of the crime and the gang’s criminal antecedents, police prepared a proposal to add Sections 3(1)(ii), 3(2) and 3(4) of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, 1999. The case is being supervised by senior PI Satish Ade and zonal DCP Sandeep Pakhale.
