Guwahati: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Saturday launched its first ‘smart house numbering system,’ marking a major step towards modernising urban governance and public service delivery in the city. The initiative was inaugurated in the city’s Birubari area.GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania, who inaugurated the launch, said the initiative marks the transition of the city’s residential infrastructure from manual towards technology-driven addressing system, designed to advance management in the city.

“Every residential unit will be assigned a unique house number and the plate will be embedded with a QR code linked to a GIS-based smart identification platform. The digital plates are designed to serve as a single point of reference for citizens and municipal authorities, improving accuracy in property identification and service delivery,” Sarania said.Officials said the new system will strengthen property tax management, streamline civic services and enhance urban planning by creating a reliable and searchable database of residential units across the city. The QR-enabled plates will also allow authorised municipal staff to quickly verify property details on site, while residents can benefit from faster grievance redressal and improved service access.GMC commissioner Chinmoy Prakash Phookan said, “The unique house number plating initiative is the cornerstone of our mission to modernise Guwahati. By integrating technology directly into our residential infrastructure, we are creating a transparent and efficient system that benefits every taxpayer and streamlines municipal operations.”The programme held at Udaypur Kali Mandir was attended by GMC mayor, deputy mayor, commissioner, ward councillors. The initial rollout began from Ward 29 before and is being expanded in phases to cover all wards across the city. GMC officials confirmed that public awareness drives and on-ground support teams will accompany the rollout team to ensure smooth adoption by residents.
