An 11-year-old girl has died after being found in the water at a beauty spot in Midlothian.

A major search operation was launched after concerns were raised for a young girl in Gore Glen Woodland Park near Gorebridge at about 12:40 on Thursday.

The girl’s body was found in the park’s Gore Water, near Shank Bridge, at about 16:25. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A force spokesperson said: “Her death is being treated as unexplained and inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

Police said her family were aware.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it sent two appliances to the incident shortly before 16:30 to support emergency services partners.
