Handwara, Oct 21: Students of Government Degree College (GDC), Handwara, are set to get relief from daily transport difficulties after a bus funded under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) was inaugurated at the college on Wednesday.
The bus was inaugurated by Langate MLA Sheikh Khursheed in the presence of representatives from the office of Baramulla MP Er Rashid, including former BDC Langate Showkat Hussain, former Municipal Chairman Langate Advocate Shahnawaz Abdullah, and other dignitaries. Principal GDC Handwara, Professor Aijaz Hussain Kanth, along with college staff, was also present.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Sheikh Khursheed said the bus fulfilled a commitment made by Er Rashid during his visit to the college last year.
“The MP had promised to provide a bus for GDC Handwara during his visit last year, and today that promise has been fulfilled. This is an important step towards addressing the difficulties faced by students, particularly those travelling from far-flung and hilly areas,” Khursheed said.
He said Er Rashid had consistently raised issues related to education and student welfare, adding that initiatives such as free coaching in the Langate constituency reflected his commitment to improving educational opportunities.
Khursheed also thanked the district administration and college authorities for their support in facilitating the process.
He said MPLADS funds were being recommended for development works across all 18 Assembly constituencies falling under the Baramulla parliamentary constituency, with the aim of addressing local requirements and promoting balanced development.
Students welcomed the new facility, saying the lack of reliable transport often made their daily journey to college difficult.
“For many students, reaching college on time is a challenge because of the hilly terrain and limited transport facilities. This bus will make our daily commute easier and safer, and help us focus more on our studies,” students said.
Principal Professor Aijaz Hussain Kanth and the college staff also welcomed the initiative, saying improved transport facilities would make the institution more accessible to students from distant areas.
The MP’s office reiterated its commitment to supporting educational institutions, addressing public grievances and assisting people affected by natural disasters.
