Mapusa: The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) on Friday inspected a site along the Moira river to examine the destruction of mangroves within the eco-sensitive coastal regulation zone (CRZ).The inspection team comprised GCZMA expert member Harshada Gauns, engineer Bhargavi Kelkar, and field surveyor Siddhi Morajkar, and was accompanied by complainant Nerissa Miranda and Green Goa Brigade convener, Avertino Miranda.A source said that the team examined the butchering of the protected coastal buffer and launched an inquiry to identify those involved.Last month, Miranda had brought the issue to the attention of the GCZMA, the environment department, and the Panaji range forest officer, seeking that the destruction of mangroves be stopped and a police complaint be filed. She warned that the damage to the area was irreversible.Mangroves provide a vital nesting habitat for birds, crocodiles, otters, and marine life. Removal of the natural storm barriers, the complainant said, has exposed the residents of Moira, Tivim, Colvale, and surrounding low-lying villages to the threat of flooding during the monsoons.
