Ahmedabad: A fire broke out in a main gas pipeline near Kudasan on the Por road in Gandhinagar on Thursday after it was damaged during sewer line excavation, triggering panic among residents and shopkeepers, who rushed to safer places. Firefighters brought the blaze under control after the gas supply was cut off. No casualties were reported.The pipeline was damaged during sewer line work undertaken by the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation. Eyewitnesses alleged that the civic body had not informed the gas company before carrying out the excavation, leading to the incident, fire officers said.The fire was reported shortly after a loud sound was heard from the underground pipeline, after which flames shot up from the site. Fire brigade teams reached the spot with two fire tenders and coordinated with gas company officials to shut off the gas supply, preventing the fire from spreading further. Firefighters used water jets to cool the area and extinguish the flames.Engineers from the gas company also reached the site to inspect the damaged pipeline and begin restoration work. The incident caused traffic disruption on the stretch and prompted people in the vicinity to move away from the area as a precaution.
