In 2025, Ranchi district reported an alarming increase in road accidents and fatalities compared to the previous year. Yet, the ratio of deaths to injuries saw a remarkable decline, plummeting from 85 to merely 18.

Ranchi: Ranchi district witnessed more accidents, fatalities and injuries in 2025 compared to 2024, according to official figures from the transport department.The data further said that while the number of fatalities in road accidents remained higher than injuries in the state in 2025, the gap reduced compared to 2024.Notably, the National Crime Record Bureau’s 2024 report stated that Jharkhand was among the five states/Union territories (UT) that recorded more deaths than injuries in road accidents in 2023. Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Punjab, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh were other states/UT that showed similar trends.According to the official figures, there were 825 accidents in Ranchi district in 2025 compared to 746 in 2024, an increase of 79. However, the number of deaths increased by only seven in 2025 compared to 2024.In 2025, the number of fatalities and injuries in the district was 557 and 539, meaning 18 more people died than the number injured in road accidents. In comparison, the number of people killed was 550 in 2024, while the number of injuries was 465, which meant the gap was 85.When contacted, district transport officer Akhilesh Kumar said, “The transport, traffic and road construction department took several measures to reduce accidents and fatalities. Several corrective measures, like road rumblers, were embedded in the black spots, including the Chhutupalu valley, to slow down vehicles. The roads were also widened to prevent accidents.”The state govt is also encouraging the good Samaritan policy, in which people who help take road accident victims to the hospital immediately are rewarded. In addition, road safety mitras are also being deployed in order to guide travellers.
