Nagpur: Sharpshooter and notorious gangster Raja Ghouse, a name that created terror in Nagpur’s underworld, was arrested from Chikhli in Kalamna late Monday in a rape case. The complaint was filed by his long-time lawyer and now live-in partner, accusing him of raping her at gunpoint. The survivor, a practicing lawyer who had represented Ghouse in several cases over the years, lodged a complaint at Mankapur police station. The survivor alleged the gangster sexually assaulted her threatening him with a firearm. The case gained momentum after the sessions court recently rejected Ghouse’s anticipatory bail plea, prompting him to go underground.A crime branch team led by senior inspector Vinayak Golhe zeroed in on the fugitive sharpshooter and nabbed him from a hideout .Ghouse has a long and violent criminal history. He was earlier involved in a daring jailbreak from Lakhnadon prison in Madhya Pradesh, where he and his associates scaled the high walls using bed sheets after cutting through the grills. Police records show he has fired at cops during encounters and continued to run a sophisticated extortion racket even while lodged in jail, terrorising businessmen and contractors across the region. The cops have claimed Ghouse operated a well-oiled network that involved threats, intimidation and targeted shootings. Despite multiple cases registered against him, including four separate extortion complaints in the past, he repeatedly evaded sustained custody through escapes and legal manoeuvres.
