Ahmedabad: Using a crane and posing as AMC employees, four men stole copper cables from a BSNL duct near Vasna in the early hours of Saturday. They were arrested after a BSNL security guard who got suspicious called up the telco. Around 220 metres of cable worth Rs 7 lakh was recovered from them. Police said there were more men, who fled.The complaint filed by a BSNL official with Vasna police states that around 2am the guard noticed a crane at the site opposite GB Shah College. The men allegedly told him they were civic officials and asked him to sit aside while they opened the BSNL duct and began cutting the copper cable.The security guard alerted BSNL officials, who informed the police control room. When police reached the spot, some of the men allegedly fled. The four caught have been identified as Ravikant Sharma (38); Vishnu Yadav (38); Jitesh Yadav (24); and Rahul Bharwad (28), all from Ahmedabad.Police said they recovered around 220m of 1,200-pair copper cable in cut condition, the crane bearing a Gujarat registration number besides five helmets, four metal chains, six iron saws, a baton light, a hammer and a torch.A case has also been registered against the unidentified associates of the accused.
