If you see the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi, Hindu tradition says you may invite f unwanted blame into your life. That belief comes from an old story about Lord Ganesha and Chandra, the Hindu deity associated with the Moon.
For Ganesh Chaturthi 2026, the festival falls on Monday, September 14. It marks the traditional celebration of Ganesha’s birth and begins a period of worship, reflection and new beginnings. Panchang calculations can vary by location, so if you are observing the festival in the US, check a local Hindu calendar for the exact timings in your city. According to Drik Panchang Ganesh Chaturthi is observed on the fourth lunar day, known as Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi.

Why should you not look at the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi?
According to Drik Panchang, seeing the Moon during Ganesh Chaturthi is traditionally believed to create Mithya Dosha, sometimes described as the risk of false accusations or blame. The belief comes from a Puranic story involving Ganesha, Chandra and Lord Krishna.
The story begins when Chandra laughed at Ganesha’s appearance. Ganesha became angry and cursed the Moon. The tradition later connected that curse with anyone who looked at the Moon on Chaturthi.
What is the Ganesha and Moon story?
The story carries a simple spiritual lesson. Your pride can affect how you see other people, while another person’s reaction can also expose your own ego.
Chandra is associated with beauty and brightness, but the story reminds you that even something admired can become careless or arrogant. Ganesha, meanwhile is associated with wisdom and the ability to overcome obstacles.
When Chandra or the Moon saw Ganesha, he began to mock his form. Ganesha’s large belly and elephant head became the subject of Chandra’s laughter. The insult angered Ganesha. He cursed Chandra, saying that anyone who looked at the Moon on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi would face false blame and dishonor. The curse later became part of the traditional Ganesh Chaturthi observance.
Drik Panchang explains that this tradition is linked to Mithya Dosha or Mithya Kalank, the idea of being falsely accused of wrongdoing.
The story later connects this curse to Lord Krishna. After Krishna saw the Moon on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi, he was falsely accused of stealing the precious Syamantaka jewel. Sage Narada told Krishna that the accusation was linked to the Moon curse, and Krishna observed the Ganesha Chaturthi fast to overcome the false blame.
The spiritual message can feel surprisingly modern. The story begins with pride and mockery, but it ends with recognizing a mistake, asking forgiveness and learning to respond differently.
What does Ganesh Chaturthi mean spiritually?
Ganesh Chaturthi is often associated with removing obstacles and seeking wisdom before beginning something new.
That makes the Moon story especially meaningful. Before you blame someone, react quickly or assume you know the truth, pause. Ask yourself whether your first impression is actually correct.
The idea of Mithya Kalank, or false blame, can work as a spiritual metaphor for this kind of self-awareness. You may not be able to control what others say about you. You can control how quickly you react and whether you add to the confusion.
