Ahmedabad: A 50-year-old trader from Kudasan has accused a visa consultant of cheating him and his relative out of Rs 97.5 lakh by promising Canadian PR visas for their children but allegedly providing closed work permits instead.According to the complaint filed with Infocity police, the trader was looking to send his 26-year-old son to Canada when an acquaintance based in the US recommended a visa consultancy office in Kudasan. So he and one of his relatives approached the consultant in March 2025 to send their children to Canada with PR-linked visas.The consultant allegedly claimed to have handled visas for more than 35 people and promised to arrange Canadian visas within three to four months, followed by PR within another three months. The complaint states the consultant initially demanded Rs 55 lakh per person. After negotiations, the amount was reduced to Rs 52.5 lakh for the trader’s son, who had previously been denied a visa, and Rs 45 lakh for his relative’s daughter.The trader paid Rs 50 lakh in cash and Rs 2.5 lakh through RTGS. His son subsequently travelled to Canada on a work permit.The consultant then assured the trader that his son’s PR process was underway and asked him to deposit 1,500 Canadian dollars every 15 days into the account of the company where his son was employed, purportedly towards salary. The money was returned after tax was deducted.The daughter of the trader’s relative also travelled to Canada in Aug 2025 and later secured employment. However, despite repeated assurances, the consultant allegedly kept delaying the PR process until April 2026.The complainant said the family later discovered that the two had been issued closed work permits valid for two years instead of the promised free work permits with PR.He alleged that the consultant had collected Rs 97.5 lakh — Rs 52.5 lakh from him and Rs 45 lakh from his relative — but failed to secure PR and provided visas different from those promised. Infocity police registered a complaint of cheating and breach of trust.
