Panaji: Two days after panic buying resulted in some fuel stations running dry, Goa govt issued a circular restricting the sale of petrol and diesel in containers. Authorities also said action would be taken against unauthorised storage of fuel at residences or workplaces.Rumours over a shortage of fuel in Goa prompted thousands of people to queue up at fuel stations to fill up their vehicles. Many motorists were also seen filling up jerry cans, water dispensers, and other containers with fuel.“It has been brought to our notice through various reports that certain individuals are collecting petrol in loose containers and cans from retail fuel outlets and storing the same at their residences or other unauthorised places. Such practices pose a serious threat to public safety and may lead to fire hazards and other untoward incidents,” said north Goa collector Ankit Yadav.Govt directed all fuel pump dealers not to dispense petrol or diesel in loose containers or cans under any circumstances.“Fuel shall be dispensed only directly into the fuel tanks of vehicles in compliance with safety norms and existing regulations. Unauthorised storage of petrol or diesel at residential premises or any other unapproved locations is strictly prohibited. Any person found violating these instructions shall be liable for strict legal action under relevant provisions of law,” said Yadav.South Goa district magistrate Egna Cleetus issued a similar order for South Goa banning the sale of petrol and diesel in bottles and other containers across Kushavati and South Goa. Fuel will now be dispensed only into vehicle tanks, with limited exceptions. Strict action will be taken against violators, and inspections will be carried out to ensure compliance, said authorities. Govt directed Goa police, the civil supplies department, and the directorate of fire and emergency services to conduct regular inspections and take necessary enforcement action.
