Buxar: The department of prisons and correctional services is moving ahead with a plan to set up a fuel station on the premises of Buxar Central Jail.Officials from two oil marketing companies—Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL)—recently inspected the proposed site, and HPCL has given its nod for setting up the fuel station. They said formal procedures are expected to begin soon, and the outlet will be set up in the outer area of the jail campus.Spread over nearly 80 acres, the Buxar Central Jail complex includes an Open Jail and a large vacant stretch on its southern side. Located along the main road, the identified site has been found suitable for commercial use, which led to its selection.According to sources, inmates from the Open Jail will operate the fuel station. Currently, many inmates travel to the town daily in search of work but often return without employment, resulting in irregular income. The proposed outlet is expected to provide steady jobs and fair wages to around 18 inmates initially, with scope for expansion. In a related initiative, the department has recently launched a “Mukti Outlet” in Buxar to sell products made by inmates, including spices, soaps and other items. Buxar Central Jail was once known for manufacturing execution ropes.Jail superintendent Gyanita Gaurav said preparations for setting up a fuel station on the jail premises are underway and inspections have been completed. However, the project is yet to be officially announced. “We will share updates following directions from senior officials in Patna,” she said.
