Panaji: On average, six foreign nationals have been deported by Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Goa, per month till Sept for allegedly overstaying, while more than 100 foreigners have obtained exit permits and left India. This week, three foreigners—including nationals from Japan, Uganda, and Kenya—have been deported.A total of 60 foreigners illegally overstaying have been deported by the FRRO, Goa, since Jan 2025.These include 32 males and females respectively.A senior police officer said that the FRRO Goa deported one male foreign national from Japan on Thursday. He was convicted by the court for overstaying. So also, on Saturday, FRRO deported a female Uganda national and a male Kenyan national. The Ugandan national was caught overstaying by the staff of Crime Branch and lodged in the detention centre.The Kenyan national who had arrived in India many years ago was convicted in a drug case but was acquitted in appeal.A senior police officer said that the FRRO Goa continues its efforts in tracing foreigners who are overstaying and initiating the process of their deportation.“More than 60 Foreign Nationals who were overstaying were deported by FRRO this year and more than 100 Foreign Nationals who were overstaying have obtained Exit permit and departed the country,” a senior police officer said.Goa police have established a detention centre at Mapusa. Police said that those people found to be involved in illegal activities and overstaying are lodged in the detention centre, and FRRO starts their deportation process. Police said that in some cases, deportation takes a long time due to the verification of documents.An investigation by the FRRO into overstaying by foreigners has revealed that while Russians and Europeans survive in Goa on rental income earned in their respective countries, those from Africa, such as Nigerians, are survivors of human trafficking, and Bangladeshis work as domestic helpers and ragpickers.The investigation revealed that most foreigners overstaying in Goa stay in Pernem and Canacona talukas.Over the last one and a half years, FRRO Goa has deported or facilitated the exit of over 150 foreign nationals, including over 29 Bangladeshi nationals, who were overstaying.
