PILIBHIT: Nearly 100 frontline personnel from the forest department and enforcement agencies were trained to identify illegally traded wildlife articles during a specialised workshop at the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve (DTR) on Saturday.The workshop, aimed at strengthening efforts to curb wildlife trafficking along forest corridors and border areas, brought together 97 personnel and concluded in the evening.The training was conducted in two sessions.The morning session was attended by 35 forest department personnel deployed across the DTR, while the afternoon session involved 62 officers from multiple enforcement agencies, including 55 personnel from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), two Railway Protection Force (RPF) officers, three local police personnel and two customs officials.

Monesh Singh Tomar, assistant manager at the Wildlife Trust of India’s (WTI) Wildlife Crime Control Division, briefed participants on evolving wildlife crime patterns, global trafficking trends and commonly traded animal and plant derivatives.A practical session was conducted by Kuldeep Singh, a head constable with the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), who trained participants to identify wildlife derivatives using visual and physical characteristics.Officers also received hands-on exposure to seized wildlife articles to improve detection during border checks, railway inspections and field patrols.Participants were provided with pocket guidebooks on wildlife identification and post-seizure procedures to support enforcement efforts.Raghvendra Pratap Singh, senior field officer at WTI’s Wildlife Crime Control Division, said the initiative aimed to strengthen coordination among forest, police, customs, railway and border security personnel to improve detection of wildlife contraband and disrupt illegal trafficking networks.
