MUMBAI: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is expected to complete Phase II of Metro Line 9, connecting Kashigaon to Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium in Mira-Bhayandar, in December.Following completion of the civil and systems work, the authority will invite the commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) to inspect the stretch and grant safety certification. The section will be opened to passengers after receiving the mandatory clearance.Phase II will have four stations: Sai Baba Nagar, Meditya Nagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Garden and Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium, extending metro connectivity deeper into Mira-Bhayandar.The first phase, from Dahisar East to Kashigaon, was opened to the public in April 2026.Metro Line 9 is an extension of Metro Line 7, which connects Dahisar East with Gundavali in Andheri East.Once the entire corridor is operational, commuters from Mira-Bhayandar will have a direct metro link to the existing suburban metro network, reducing dependence on road-based transport for journeys towards Andheri and other parts of Mumbai. The corridor is expected to ease congestion on the Western Express Highway (WEH), one of the key arterial roads in Mumbai, while providing an alternative to overcrowded Western Railway suburban services. The growing residential population in Mira-Bhayandar has increased travel demand, with many commuters relying on road transport and suburban trains to reach workplaces in Mumbai.According to the MMRDA, Metro Line 9 is expected to reduce travel time by 50% to 75%, depending on prevailing road traffic conditions. The reduction in journey time could make daily commutes more predictable, particularly during peak hours when traffic congestion on the WEH and crowding on suburban trains are major concerns. With Phase II’s commissioning, the authority expects to strengthen connectivity between Dahisar and Mira-Bhayandar and improve access to the wider metro network. However, the extent to which the line eases pressure on roads and suburban trains will depend on passenger uptake, service frequency and seamless interchange with Metro Line 7.
