Rourkela: In the small town of Khariar in Nuapada district, Rajesh Kumar Podh (45), a laboratory technician, has been feeding the underprivileged and mentally-challenged thrice a daily for the last 24 years. Rajesh, a resident of Lalsahebpada in Khariar, had opened a small pathology clinic in 2001 after completing his diploma. In 2002 he witnessed a mentally-challenged man rummaging through a garbage bin for food. He rushed home, brought a meal, and fed the man. Since then, he has been feeding the underprivileged.Initially, Rajesh cycled through the town carrying food he prepared alongside his own meals. Today, he feeds 22 people daily, covering breakfast, lunch and dinner. His wife, Haripriya, whom he married in 2010, has been an unwavering pillar of support. She manages the household and prepares additional meals for those Rajesh serves. After returning from his clinic, Rajesh packs the food and sets out on his two-wheeler, distributing meals to the underprivileged every day. In the morning, he often buys breakfast items, while lunch and dinner are cooked at home. He serves food on plate with a glass of water.Rajesh’s generosity extends beyond meals. He offers free diagnostic tests to poor patients at his clinic, collects leftover foods from parties to serve them to these people and distributes blankets during winter. He has even cremated three persons. Over the years, his continuous effort has drawn support from kind-hearted people. In 2022, the Khariar Officers’ Club gifted him a two-wheeler to aid his efforts.“I cannot see the pain of those helpless people. I will continue feeding them till the end of my life. I also want other people to feed and serve these helpless, underprivileged people. Some kind-hearted people support me in my mission,” said Rajesh. His wife, Haripriya, said, “I am proud of my husband as he has been feeding some helpless and mentally-challenged persons since last 24 years. Our service to these people would continue till our last breath.”
