Prayagraj: After enduring over a week of extreme heat, residents of the Sangam City finally experienced some relief on Monday as temperatures dipped slightly and humidity levels improved. The maximum temperature, which peaked at a scorching 45.7°C on Sunday — making it one of the hottest days this season — came down to 44.2°C.Though the drop in temperature was marginal, it was the change in humidity that brought noticeable respite. The relative humidity ranged between a high of 63% and a low of 21% during the day, making the weather comparatively less harsh than the preceding days when dry and hot winds made stepping outdoors extremely difficult.According to IMD, the maximum was 3.3 notches above normal. The minimum stood at 26.9°C, 1.9 units above normal.For over a week, Prayagraj witnessed relentless heatwave conditions, with temperatures ranking among the highest in the state. The intense heat disrupted daily routines, especially for those required to step out for work. Commuters, vendors and labourers faced the brunt of the blazing sun, with roads and markets wearing a deserted look during peak afternoon hours.Even on Monday, despite some relief, people continued to take precautions while venturing out. Many were seen covering their heads and faces, while roadside vendors reported brisk sales of summer essentials. Earthen pots, commonly used to store cool drinking water, witnessed high demand, along with seasonal fruits such as watermelon, muskmelon and cucumber, which are known to help combat heat.According to the meteorological department, further relief is likely in the coming days. The department has forecast a gradual decline in temperature over the next 24 hours. Additionally, light to moderate rainfall is expected in Prayagraj and adjoining areas starting April 29, which may continue for a couple of days.The expected weather change is likely to bring much-needed relief from the prolonged spell of extreme heat. However, authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and stay hydrated, as temperatures are still above normal and heat-related risks persist.
