Panaji: A tense situation unfolded in Panaji on Saturday after a group of protesters, who had gathered to celebrate what they described as a victory following the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, displayed a placard reading, “Free Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam.”A minor scuffle also broke out between the protesters and BJP members after one of the protesters allegedly used abusive language against them. Police intervened promptly and prevented the two groups from taking the law into their own hands.The protesters had assembled at Azad Maidan when the placard was displayed. Police detained the person holding the placard, triggering heated arguments between the protestors and BJP members outside the Goa police headquarters.

The protestors demanded the person’s release and raised slogans seeking his immediate release. BJP members questioned the relevance of raising the issue of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam during a gathering meant to celebrate the resignation of the Union minister. The confrontation continued for some time before police brought the situation under control and prevented any further escalation.
