Mysuru: In a compassionate effort to support underprivileged women battling breast cancer, Bharath Hospital and Institute of Oncology (BHIO), in collaboration with Automotive Axles, successfully performed free breast cancer surgeries for 47 needy patients under the ‘Nari Swasthi’ project. The initiative was launched with the objective of fully funding surgical treatment for economically disadvantaged women diagnosed with breast cancer. By removing financial barriers, the programme ensured that patients received timely, high-quality surgical care at no cost.Dr YS Madhavi, chief radiation oncologist and medical superintendent at BHIO, on Wednesday stressed the importance of early diagnosis and comprehensive care. “Our goal is not only to extend treatment but also to guide patients through recovery and counselling, ensuring holistic care.” She noted that breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women in India, with mortality rates often rising due to delayed diagnosis.Dr Vijaykumar M, senior consultant surgical oncologist and robotic surgeon, who performed the surgeries, highlighted the emotional and social impact of the initiative. “Each patient’s journey is unique. It is immensely rewarding to see these women regain hope and strength. Surgical treatment is only one part of recovery—emotional support and regular follow-up are equally important,” he said. He added that several beneficiaries did not even possess BPL cards, yet were able to access treatment through the project and are now leading healthier lives.Expressing the company’s commitment to community welfare, Nagaraja Gargeshwari, president & director of Automotive Axles, said, “Through this programme, we are proud to contribute our resources to create meaningful impact.”BHIO COO Gowtham Dhamerla was present.Beneficiaries also expressed gratitude.
