Ghaziabad: Stalled over repeated reviews and design changes, the draft for a four-lane elevated road connecting Ghanta Ghar to Bhatia Mod on GT Road, one of the city’s most congested stretches, has been submitted to the Centre for vetting.Narrow roads, roadside markets, two colleges and a high volume of vehicles heading towards Loni, Lalkuan and MMG Hospital lead to daily jams on the corridor, particularly during peak office hours. The project is expected to cut travel time on the stretch and ease congestion for commuters.GDA officials said three alignments have been drawn up with estimated costs ranging from Rs 200 crore to Rs 253 crore, with one of them including slip roads and underpasses to ease traffic flow to Ghanta Ghar market, Daulatpura, New Gandhi Nagar and Dayanand Nagar.

The delay has been a source of frustration for residents and traders who use the corridor daily. Since the project was first floated in 2022, it has gone through multiple design changes and reviews without reaching the tendering stage. A final decision from the central govt is expected within weeks, after which the tender process will begin, officials said.Officials said the elevated road would do more than reduce travel time. By separating fast-moving traffic from local pedestrian and vendor activity at ground level, it is expected to improve road safety and reduce the idling that contributes to air pollution in the area. Access to the Ghanta Ghar market is also expected to improve. “Once completed, it will help provide a seamless flow of traffic connecting commuters more efficiently between key points along GT Road,” an official said.
