Kolkata: Bhangar remained tense on Tuesday following Monday’s clashes between students and police, with four persons arrested in connection with the incidents. Activists of the ISF-backed Students Front and the SFI staged protests against an alleged police lathicharge and demanded action against officers responsible.Based on a female student’s complaint alleging molestation and road blockades targeting governing body president Sayantan Basu’s vehicle, police arrested Aslam Habib (19) and Saharuk Akhtar Ali Molla (23) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Separately, on a suo motu complaint by SI Sheikh Jahangir Hossain, Rabiu Mistry (32) and Rabiu Zaman Sheikh (36) were arrested for unlawful assembly and obstructing police.Protests were held at Ghatakpukur, the DCP’s office in Nalmuri and the Baruipur subdivisional court. SFI and Students Front members marched along Basanti State Highway to the DCP office and submitted a deputation to Bhangar DCP Shivprasad Patra, demanding campus normalcy, withdrawal of cases against students and action against police officers. The protest disrupted traffic for over half an hour before central forces cleared the road.When the accused were produced before Baruipur court, fresh tension erupted as SFI and ABVP supporters exchanged slogans. An altercation also broke out between lawyers and ABVP supporters after two students were granted bail.Kolkata Police Joint CP (Legal) Bhaskar Mukhopadhyay reviewed the law-and-order situation at Bhangar police station.
