Srinagar, May 17: A forest fire that broke out this afternoon in Compartment No. 9 of the Shankaracharya Hills area in Srinagar was brought under control by fire personnel following a challenging operation in steep and slippery terrain.

According to officials, the incident was reported to the Fire and Emergency Services Station Gowkadal, which immediately dispatched teams to the affected site.

The fire had spread in a forest compartment within the ecologically sensitive slopes of Shankaracharya Hills, an area known for difficult access and rugged topography.

Firefighters faced significant operational challenges due to the steep gradient and unstable footing in the hillside forest.

Despite these constraints, personnel managed to contain the blaze after sustained efforts, preventing its spread to adjoining forest patches.

The Fire and Emergency Services Department, Jammu and Kashmir confirmed that the situation was brought fully under control and no major damage to surrounding vegetation was reported.

Officials noted that the timely response and coordinated firefighting effort helped avert a potentially larger forest fire incident.

Authorities are expected to assess the affected area to determine the extent of damage and to investigate the possible cause of the fire.
