Mangaluru: Foreign currency equivalent to Rs 80 lakh was seized at the Mangaluru International Airport. Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Mangaluru Regional unit succeeded in cracking one of the biggest seizures of foreign currency in recent times in Mangaluru. Foreign currency was seized from passengers who were scheduled to travel to Abu Dhabi.Kankanala Anil Kumar, assistant director, DRI, Mangaluru, stated that, acting on specific intelligence, officers of the DRI regional unit intercepted a male passenger and two female passengers at the departure hall. They were scheduled to travel to Abu Dhabi by an IndiGo flight on Feb 27, he said.The foreign currency was found concealed in their hand baggage and check-in baggage. US dollars, along with a small amount of Pound Sterling, Saudi Riyal, and UAE Dirham were seized.Following this, three people from Kerala, were arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. The court remanded them to judicial custody, he said.“Further investigation is in progress to unearth other members of the syndicate and the investors,” the officer added.
