Nagpur: Calling for a sharper global focus in research, Dr N Kalaiselvi urged scientists at CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute to prioritise at least two long-term, globally competitive technologies to position the institute as a benchmark and a National Centre of Excellence. Citing the successful remediation of the mercury-contaminated site at Kodaikanal, she described it as a ‘matter of national pride’ and a model for impactful science.Dr Kalaiselvi delivered the Foundation Day address at NEERI’s 68th Foundation Day celebrations held on April 8. She emphasised the need to revive the institute’s legacy by enhancing research excellence and societal impact, urging scientists to actively submit proposals, mentor at least three students each, and generate meaningful success stories.Highlighting gaps, she said that while NEERI is addressing several societal challenges, its research impact must ideally increase threefold. She called for accreditation of all R&D facilities, expansion of accredited labs, and formation of collaborative consortia to boost visibility and outcomes. Appreciating the institute’s testbed facility, she also stressed the need for sustainable business models.She further underlined the importance of focused research on soil health and urged NEERI to take a leadership role in helping India achieve its ‘Net Zero 2070′ goals through science-driven interventions.Earlier, NEERI Director Dr S Venkata Mohan said the institute has functioned as a national referral laboratory for nearly seven decades, delivering sustainable solutions and supporting key policy initiatives. He highlighted NEERI’s growing international recognition and its role in translating science into policy and practice.On the occasion, Dr Kalaiselvi inaugurated a series of facilities, including a Living Lab, Bamboo Bio-Germplasm Conservation Garden, Testbed Facility, Bio-CCUS Innovation Hub, and a Student Research & Innovation Expo. She also released key publications such as the Environment Sustainability and Governance Report, Water Technology Compendium, Circular Economy Report on Solid Waste, and NEERI’s technology compendium and newsletter.
