Hindu Groups Lodge Protest, Cop SuspendedKanpur: Police registered an FIR, detained five people and suspended a policeman after a family alleged it was assaulted for refusing to convert in Gujaini police station area of Kanpur.An inquiry is also underway against the police outpost in charge over alleged negligence. Deputy commissioner of police, south, Deependra Nath Chaudhary said a dispute and assault had occurred between two groups in a slum settlement in Varun Vihar. One group alleged pressure to convert and a detailed investigation was being conducted, he said. Adequate police force was deployed and the situation was normal, Chaudhary added.Sonu, a driver from Jalaun, has lived with his wife Rita and son Vishal in Ramgopal Chauraha Kachchi Basti for about two years. Rita alleged that their Muslim neighbours had long pressured the family to convert.On Monday night, they again barged into their house and allegedly attacked them with sticks after they refused to convert. Rita alleged that she was also beaten when she intervened as her husband and son were attacked. Rita submitted a complaint at Gujaini police outpost. She alleged that the outpost in charge threatened her with action and pressured her to remain silent instead of acting against the accused.Workers of Hindu organisations subsequently protested, demanding action against the accused and the outpost in charge. Some workers gheraoed the police station and raised slogans.Naubasta ACP Abhishek Kumar Rahul reached the spot with police personnel after receiving information about communal tension. He pacified the protesters by assuring action and said a case was registered on the victim’s complaint.
