Surat: Lalgate police booked five persons in connection with the suicide of a 22-year-old woman. Sadiya Khatik had hanged herself on March 23. After her funeral, her father, Rafiq Khatik, filed a complaint against her husband, in-laws and two sisters-in-law for abetting her suicide. According to the FIR, Sadiya married Siddik, the son of his Rafiq’s sister Taslim, in 2024. She later had a daughter, who is now 11 months old. Sadiya was allegedly harrased by Siddik, his father Shakur, mother Taslim and sisters-in-law Nurjahan and Farin. The family were allegedly demanding dowry and harassing her as she had not given birth to a son. On March 23, she hanged herself after a call to her mother saying she could not bear the harassment anymore. Lalgate police have filed a case for abetment to suicide under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Dowry Prohibition Act.
