Erode: A fire broke out in a clothes godown in Agraharam area here on Saturday due to a short circuit, completely destroying materials worth Rs10 lakh.According to the Karungalpalayam police, the godown was taken on rent by Harif, of VGP Nagar area at Krishnampalayam, to store old clothes collected from various parts of Erode. “It was never opened in the past six months. When his employees opened the godown around 1pm on Saturday, a short circuit triggered the fire and all old clothes went up in flames,” a police officer said. The fire soon engulfed the godown. When alerted, firefighters arrived in two fire tenders, broke the side wall of the godown with an earth mover and brought the fire under control after struggling for an hour. As thick smoke enveloped the entire area, the public complained of breathing difficulties. The Karungalpalayam police have registered a case and are inquiring.
