Sonipat: An FIR has been registered nearly two-and-a-half months after a man from Thana Khurd village in Sonipat district died after allegedly consuming poisonous agricultural spray, with a property dispute emerging as a key aspect of the case.The deceased, Dinesh, died during treatment at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak, on June 21. His brother, Pravesh Kumar, has alleged that Dinesh and his wife, Preeti, were facing sustained pressure and threats in connection with a property dispute and were being asked to withdraw legal proceedings.According to the complaint, Dinesh consumed a weedicide between 5 pm and 6 pm on June 20. His family took him to Kharkhoda civil hospital, where he was provided initial treatment before being referred to PGIMS. Pravesh has alleged that his brother was under severe mental stress due to the alleged harassment and pressure arising from the property dispute. The family has claimed that Dinesh gave a statement to police shortly before his death.According to Pravesh’s complaint, head constable Vikas Kumar reached PGIMS on June 21, where Dinesh allegedly gave a statement before police. The family claims that he spoke about the alleged harassment, threats and pressure he had faced, and that the statement bore his signatures. The family has sought examination of the alleged original statement along with the medico-legal report (MLR), postmortem report, forensic sciences laboratory (FSL)/viscera report and medical records from the Kharkhoda civil hospital and PGIMS.Pravesh alleged that members of the accused side took Preeti from the new bus stand in Rohtak, against her will and kept her for nearly a week. The family alleges that Dinesh and Preeti were subsequently threatened and pressured to withdraw legal proceedings. According to the complaint, Dinesh approached Urban Estate police station, Rohtak, in connection with the incident, following which an FIR was registered. Pravesh has also levelled allegations against police personnel. He claimed that head constable Vikas threatened him with registration of an abetment-of-suicide case against Dinesh.The family said Pravesh and his father subsequently met Kharkhoda station house officer (SHO) Anil Kumar, alleging that they were pressured to withdraw the complaint. According to the family, after allegedly failing to get action at the local level, complaints were sent to senior authorities.On July 13, representations were reportedly sent by registered post to the Haryana DGP, a senior Rohtak range police officer, Sonipat superintendent of police and Kharkhoda assistant commissioner of police.The family also approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and filed a complaint through the Haryana government’s CM Window on July 22.Kharkhoda SHO Anil said the matter related to a property dispute and that, based on the circumstances available to police earlier, no police action was warranted at that stage. He said the matter subsequently came to the police through the court and an FIR was registered on Wednesday.
