Varanasi: Three policemen were allegedly assaulted by a group of youths after the cops objected to rash driving in Virat Nagar Colony under the Cantt police station area on Tuesday night. The police apprehended two individuals from the scene after lodging an FIR in this connection. The health condition of one of the detained youths deteriorated and he was admitted to DDU district hospital. The youth’s family claimed that both the youths were thrashed by police. ACP Cantt Nitin Taneja stated that a CCTV footage from the incident site showed that constable Niranjan Kumar was heading towards his room on foot when an uncontrolled SUV passed through the area. The cops cautioned the youths driving the vehicle against rash driving after they stopped the SUV for a few seconds. The footage showed that after some time, many youths returned with sticks in hand and attacked Niranjan and two other cops outside Niranjan’s rented accommodation. After attacking the cops, the assailants left the scene. The cops reported the matter to Cantt police, and an FIR was lodged against both identified and unidentified assailants. Later, the police reached Virat Nagar Colony and apprehended two individuals, including Ashwini and his brother. However. the youths’ family claimed that they both were thrashed and dragged by the police.Upon reaching the police station, Ashwini’s health condition deteriorated and he was taken to the hospital. The ACP stated that while all assailants involved in the attack on the cops were being identified with the help of CCTV footage, a separate investigation has been ordered into the allegations made by Ashwini’s family.
