Canacona: Former chief justice of the Allahabad high court Ferdino Rebello said it was unfortunate that the speaker of the Goa legislative assembly declined to allow a bill submitted by five political parties seeking protection of agricultural land.Rebello was addressing a public meeting in Canacona on Sunday under the banner ‘Enough is Enough’, where he spoke about protecting remaining paddy fields and other ecologically sensitive lands. He said he would side with the people of Goa if there is a statewide agitation against unplanned land conversions.Rebello urged people of Canacona to come out in large numbers and support the movement, saying ecological degradation in the state will not stop unless people show united opposition.Speakers at the meeting cited the success of people of Chimbel who opposed the Unity Mall project. They also referred to protests led by the RG in St Andre constituency against land conversions under Section 39A of the TCP Act.
