Kolkata: Jadavpur University’s executive council (EC) on Saturday approved the external fact-finding committee’s report recommending punishment for at least five to six students who were involved in the campus violence, in which two professors were assaulted. The violence took place on Feb 20.JU formed a probe panel with three external members, the pro-VC and the deputy registrar. “The committee’s report was placed at the EC meeting and the recommendations for penalising them for their involvement in the incident, in which two professors were assaulted, were approved. Various kinds of stringent action have been suggested by the panel, including suspension of a semester,” said a source.JU had earlier barred three students from entering campus for two weeks, during which they were not allowed to take exams. An ex-student was also barred from entering the campus until further notice. “Four of them appeared to have been involved in the incident, so they were debarred,” said sources, adding that names of these students are there in the committee’s report.Violence flared up on Feb 20 as students’ groups engaged in a brawl near Science-Arts intersection. When teachers managed to calm the situation, a few students, including the four, hurled abuses and assaulted people at random.
