Guwahati: Key Fancy Bazar roads have been declared no-vending zones to ease chronic congestion, minister Kaushik Rai said.The decision was announced at a review meeting at Janata Bhawan on Thursday evening, where measures to decongest the commercial hub and improve traffic management were discussed.“During the meeting, SS Road, MS Road and HB Road were declared ‘no-vending zone’ and vehicle parking along these roads was completely prohibited as part of an effort to find a permanent solution to Fancy Bazar’s long-standing traffic congestion problem,” Rai said in a social media post.Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) officials said SS Road was declared a no-vending zone under a high court order dated March 21, 2018. Vendors operating from roadside footpaths were asked to relocate to the GMC Fancy Bazar market complex.Rai stressed the need to raise awareness among traders, vendors, commuters and the public before implementing the measures.“A follow-up meeting involving all concerned stakeholders will be held shortly to ensure effective implementation of these decisions,” Rai added.Central Guwahati MLA Vijay Gupta, GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania, commissioner Chinmoy Phukan, ward councillors, city police officials and market committee representatives attended the meeting.
